Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit (as on 01 July 2025):

  • For most posts: Minimum 18 years, Maximum 32 years (for 'Others' category).
  • Probation Officer (Post Code 1023): Minimum 22 years, Maximum 32 years (Others).
  • Probation Officer (Post Code 1011): Minimum 26 years, Maximum 42 years (Others).
  • Forester (Post Codes 3362, 3363): Minimum 21 years, Maximum 32 years (Others).
  • Executive Officer, Grade III (Post Code 1654): Minimum 25 years, Maximum 37 years (Others).

Educational Qualification & Technical Qualification:

TNPSC Group 2 & 2A Services Selection Process

The selection process for the Combined Civil Services Examination - II involves multiple stages:

Stage 1: Common Preliminary Examination (Screening Test)

This is a single-paper objective-type examination for both Group II and Group IIA Services. Marks obtained in this stage will NOT be counted for final merit. It serves only to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination.

Subjects: Language (General Tamil or General English - 100 Questions), General Studies (Degree Standard - 75 Questions), Aptitude and Mental Ability (SSLC Standard - 25 Questions).

Total Questions: 200 | Maximum Marks: 300 | Duration: 3 hours | Minimum Qualifying Marks: 90 (for all communities).

Stage 2: Main Examination (Separate for Group II and Group IIA)

For Group II Services:

  • Paper I (Tamil Eligibility Test): SSLC Standard, 100 Marks, 3 hours, Descriptive Type. Minimum 40 marks required to qualify.
  • Paper II (General Studies): Degree Standard, 300 Marks, 3 hours, Descriptive Type. Marks from this paper alone will be counted for ranking.

For Group IIA Services:

  • Paper I (Tamil Eligibility Test): SSLC Standard, 100 Marks, 3 hours, Descriptive Type. Minimum 40 marks required to qualify.
  • Paper II (General Studies & General Intelligence/Reasoning):
    • General Studies (Degree Standard): 150 Questions
    • General Intelligence and Reasoning (SSLC Standard): 50 Questions
    Total 200 Questions, 300 Marks, 3 hours, CBT Objective Type. Marks from this paper alone will be counted for ranking.

Appearance in both papers of the Main Examination is compulsory. Answer sheets of Paper II will only be evaluated if candidates secure minimum qualifying marks in Paper I.

Stage 3: Physical Standards Test & Endurance Test (Only for Forester Post)

Candidates who opt for the Forester post and qualify in the Main Examination will undergo a Physical Standards Test and an Endurance Test. The Endurance Test involves a walk of 25 km for males and 16 km for females/third gender candidates, to be completed in four hours. This test will be conducted only at Chennai.

Stage 4: Onscreen Certificate Verification

Based on Main Examination marks, candidates will be admitted for Onscreen Certificate Verification in a prescribed ratio (e.g., 1:3 for General Category, 1:2 for Reserved Categories for Group II Services). Forester candidates will be admitted in a 1:10 ratio for this stage.

Stage 5: Physical Certificate Verification & Counselling

After Onscreen Certificate Verification, eligible candidates will be admitted to Physical Certificate Verification and Counselling in a ratio of 1:3 and 1:1.5 for General and Reserved categories respectively. Candidates will participate in counselling based on their rank for final selection.

Final Selection & Ranking Procedure

Final selection will be based on marks obtained in Paper II of the Main Examination, subject to the rule of reservation. In case of tie-breaking, higher qualification, then seniority in age, and then earlier application submission date will be considered.


How to Apply Online for TNPSC Group 2 & 2A Services 2025
